As strange as it sounds, travel is an important source of education. It provides first hand experience, lifelong retention of information and practical knowledge.

When one travels, one comes across different cultures, historical monuments, practices and learns about them through experience. A trip to Assam can teach a person about life there, cultivation of tea, jute and paddy, the issue of flooding and so on, just by exploring the area.

Additionally, what one experiences during travelling becomes a lifelong memory. There is no trouble with retention as is the case with learning from books. Anecdotes, videos and pictures make the memories permanent. In this regard, travel as a source of education scores higher than in-class learning.

Furthermore, travel gives exposure to individuals, teaching them the practical part of life. A trip to Shimla can give an insight into issues like deforestation and landslides on highways, water scarcity and the relation between tourists and pollution.

There is a lot to learn through travel. It is a mix of pleasure and learning, and stays in the mind for a longer period of time than bookish information.
