Harry Potter is a very typical story. But it is effective in telling its tale. It is a book for children that understands the fact children grow into adolescence and then further.
Harry Potter still has to go to school and deal with all that it entails — all the highs and lows. And that humanizes the characters involved who aren't two dimensional but grow and learn as the books go on, along with the readers who grow up along with the book.
Of course it isn't something unique to Harry Potter this is the basic coming of age story of the hero. This is like a by the manual interpretation of the Hero with a Thousand Faces but it subverts the tropes in an interesting and intelligent way. Rowling spends a lot of time building the world and making connections, e.g Sirius Black’s flying motorcycle is mentioned at the very start, suddenly in the third book, pretty much the whole story revolves around him.
