Answer:
I used to live in a Second Floor apartment. Looking out my back windows to the carport below, I noticed someone sleeping in a old car and brought down some blankets. A friend put them in the car, but the sleeper didn’t awaken. When he did, he eventually found me out and thanked me. Soon we were having breakfast together in my apartment. I didn’t realize he was casing the joint!
One night he suddenly appeared in my bedroom doorway! I was in bed and rather drowsy. Not until I woke up and headed for Mass did I realize he had stolen the keys to my truck as he left!
After prayer, calming down, I called the Police. I was quickly patched through to an officer nearby who was not happy about this, telling me he would be right there and would meet me in the street. As I climbed into his police car, he let me know between profanities that he had been on a stake-out nearby and had let this fellow through in my truck! I also found out the truck had been stopped across town and we were headed for that location—fast!
Driving up, the Policeman stopped, quickly got out, opened the door of another Squad Car, and proceeded to yell profanities at the top of his voice!! My ‘friend‘ was handcuffed in the back seat and listening meekly!Soon he was taken away and I drove my truck back home. But that is not the end of the story!
I received a telephone call a couple of weeks later from a Prosecuting Attorney. Seems my ‘friend’ had a wife and a couple of kids down in L.A. [I lived in the San Jose area of California.] While his wife was driving through a gang area of L.A., some kind of gang warfare was going on, shots were fired, and one of the children, in the back seat in a car seat, was killed! I was astonished and saddened. The Attorney asked whether I was willing to appear in court and testify that this man could be let free on his own recognizance in order to attend the funeral! I figured this poor guy had already suffered a devastating blow and appeared in court!
