Multiple and complex reasons might be responsible for that large scale deposition of veg­etal cover. Some possible reasons include increase of sea level due to de-glaciation—leading to burial of extensive forests under thick alluvium; or, tectonic movements resulting in submer­gence of large forest cover or any other series of earth movements and resultant decaying and chemical decomposition of buried vegetation.

As coal is transformed from vegetation and deposited by alluvium, it is only found within sedimentary rock structures. Coal is considered a sedimentary rock. Most of the present-day coal reserves are found in the peneplain or low dip folding’s of sedimentary formation.

Much of the carboniferous or good quality coals were formed about 300 million years ago. Besides carboniferous coal, another type of coal deposition, much inferior in grade, ‘had taken place in a later period. This coal — tertiary coal — mostly comprises of peat and lignite. They were deposited during tertiary period or about 30 to 100 million years ago. Tertiary coal contains low carbon percentage, high volatile matter and considerable amount of vegetal mat­ter.

So, the characteristics and quality of the coal is governed by the process and nature of decomposition, temperature of the underground area, pressure and tectonic movement and the time since the deposition had taken place.
