Flavours of life

My experience of growing a plant began with a lot of anxiety. I was told that chillies are easy to grow, and so I decided to grow chillies and spice up my lockdown life. I took the seeds and planted them in a tiny container, as instructed by my mother. They germinated within a few days and then began the actual experience of nurturing a plant.

Like children move from the playway to the main school, I had to transplant my sapling to a bigger pot. I was very anxious about the sapling surviving, because many saplings cannot take the shock of being moved. I kept checking on it every few hours and was very relieved when my mother announced that it was fine and would soon grow taller.

However, my responsibilities did not end there. I was incharge of looking after the plant, making sure that it was getting the right amount of sunshine, yet not getting scorched, was being watered twice a day, but not being over-watered. High temperatures and excess water affect plants adversely. So, everyday I dug the soil with a finger to get a feel of the moisture in the soil, and did whatever was necessary.

I waited endlessly for the plant to show some more signs of growth, other than the leaves that it put forth. Mother simply said, “Patience”, and so I waited patiently. Then one day when I was peering at the chilli plant, I saw tiny buds! I was ecstatic! These grew into white flowers, and with them my hopes grew too. I began staring at the buds several times a day. Finally, I was able to spot a small chilli! My hard work had indeed borne fruit, rather vegetable, in this case. Now my plant is laden with chillies that go into each meal! I feed my plant manure and compost, and my plant makes life more flavourful.

When I think back, I can understand how nurturing a plant is not as easy as it sounds. It is neither a one day or a one week process. It takes greater commitment and a lot of patience, but when the results show up, the sense of achievement is deep too. It is completely worth the effort!
