I always celebrate my birthday with a modest pomp and show, and this is what I did yesterday on my 14th birthday.

Days before I had sent invitation cards to my friends and relatives. Most of them had responded positively. Only a few had expressed their reluctance to attend the party in view of their previous engagements.

My best friend, Trishna, came to our house a day earlier. Both of us went to the market and made the necessary purchases. The birthday was to be celebrated in the evening and by the noon yesterday, we were equipped with everything in tiptoe order.

My relatives and close friends started pouring in, the afternoon. Some of them who came from distant places took lunch with us.

The party started in our large dinner hall in the evening. The place was well-lighted with colourful lamps, balloons, ribbons and bunting. The chairs had been arranged by the servants. A large table was laid in the middle of the room.

The cake arrived on time. The renowned baker, Mr. Sirnran, had prepared it. It was a beautiful chocolate cake with the words “Happy Birthday to Reena” embossed on it.

I stood before the cake in a fascinating dress and looked like a princess as the study of snaps later told me. I cut the cake after extinguishing all the candles but one. Everybody clapped saying ‘,Happy Birthday to you.

Every guest was given a piece of cake, sweets, namkeen, cold drinks, ice-cream, etc. Then there were songs and dances to the tune of a deck. There were also skits and titbits. It was a minicultural show.

Every guest had brought a gift for me. One of the tables in the hall was loaded with glittering gifts. I was very happy and so were all my friends and relatives.
