Santiago attributes his failure to bring in a whole fish to going out too far to find a fish initially. Several days before this point, Santiago had left the docks on his 85th day without catching any fish. He starts out farther than usual in the hopes of catching a fish. Once he is out on the water, he goes farther out, following a seabird that seems to be circling as if it has spotted a fish, and makes his first small catch of the day. Finally, he hits the jackpot. He hooks a huge marlin. The marlin, once hooked, starts towing him farther away from shore. This worries Santiago, but he feels he still has enough time to get back to shore if he catches the fish soon enough.
Then it began to make a slow hissing sound in the water and he still held it, bracing himself against the thwart and leaning back against the pull. The boat began to move slowly off toward the north-west. The fish moved steadily and they traveled slowly on the calm water. The other baits were still in the water but there was nothing to be done. “I wish I had the boy,” the old man said aloud. “I’m being towed by a fish and I’m the towing bitt."
When he catches the fish several days later, it is much too late to get back to shore without the fish getting eaten by sharks on the way home, but Santiago resolves to try anyway. His pride and his sense that a man should never give up bolster his resolve to try to bring the fish home, but when he returns, the fish is sadly no longer usable due to the sharks. He attributes his failure to going out too far, as shown in the following quote.
It is easy when you are beaten, he thought. I never knew how easy it was. And what beat you, he thought. “Nothing,” he said aloud. “I went out too far.”
His failure to bring the fish home symbolizes a commentary on the theme of man's pride holding him back from success. Santiago knew he was too far out, but made an irrational choice to stay and fight that ended up costing him because he so badly wanted to save his pride and status after so many failures.
