Answer:
Ravi Varma, Rama Vanquishing the Proud Ocean, late 19th century, Oil painting, Chitrasala, Mysore, IndiaHis romantic illustration of the epics became very popular for a short time because itwas commercially re-produced and reached a wide audience. Immediately following Ravi Varma's death his pictures were rejected as not spiritual enough and also as notreflecting the nationalist sentiments. The next generation of Indian artists searched for a new style that would reflect the pride in Indian (swadeshi) traditions that was slowly emerging all over India. In Bengal a prominent Indian family – the Tagores' who were active in literature, poetry and painting formed the vanguard of the new sentiments. Mughal and Rajput miniatures served as the Indian source for inspiration for many artists. Many others turned to folk art for inspiration.
