Answer:

Cuttack is one of the most sought after tourist destinations of Odisha. When you visit Cuttack, don't forget to visit Barabati Fort that takes you to the glorious past of the place. Let us see what makes this nine-storied structure one of the important attractions of Cuttack.

This majestic fort was built by the Ganga dynasty in the 11th century. Later, it was re-established in 14th century to the structure we see today. A visit to this fort takes you back in time to the past of the place.

Located on the banks of river Mahanadi, the Barabati fort is built across an area of around 102 acres. The gateway of the structure is one of the highlights that attract travellers. The intricate carvings here are awe-inspiring. The other attractions of the fort are its moat and the earthen mound, which gives us an insight into the times of Ganga dynasty. Today, the ruins of the fort stand next to the Barabati Stadium, where several sports events and other cultural programs keep happening. This stadium was earlier built on the interior part of the palace fort as it was a large area that could accommodate up to 30,000 people.

Excavations and other research by the Archaeological Survey of India say that there was a palace here that was built in Khondolite stone, and a temple within the fort complex that also has a temple tank. The temple was built with whitish sandstone on some laterite blocks. A few mutilated pieces of sculptures and other fragments of the structure have been discovered.
