There are many advantages of odd even scheme in Delhi.
(i) Less traffic on the road and definitely a relative reduction in pollution
(ii)The traffic on Delhi roads is so high that average travel speed is less than 8 km/hour (I was told, but average travel speed in Kerala cities is 25kmph) resulting in a lot of time to be spent/ wasted on road. With less traffic, there is a reduction in travel time with increase in travel speed.
(iii) With high traffic, it is quite difficult for emergency vehicles to reach their destination on time but with reduced traffic, it is better off.
(iv) On Social front, people of all income group travel in metro ushering a social interaction (to a limited extent)
(v) People have to walk to the metro or bus station or sometimes walk to the work place, if it is nearby. That means they have some physical activity. Otherwise, they take their vehicle and go to some parks or open place for walking
There are some disadvantages also
(i)Heavy rush in public transport system which is quite inadequate at present
(ii) Demand for Intermediate public transport modes like auto/ taxi increases which sometime lead to exploitation of commuters
(iii) There may be some problems of implementation
However, it is needless to say that odd even scheme is very much essential to solve traffic and pollution problems in the short term and with improvement of public transport system and landuse changes, the scheme can be modified by limting the same to some major roads or totally withdrawn.
