Introduction : Durga puja is the biggest festival of the Bengali community. It's basically a four days long festival which is organised on the occassion of worshiping of Goddess Durga, on the Bengali month of "Ashwin".
Details : The Durga Puja is basically organised at the same time when Navaratri is celebrated in our country. According to the mythology, Shri Ram worshipped Goddess Durga to get the blessings for victory against Ravana. Shri Ram worshipped Goddess Durga on the autumn season (Ashwin month) but previously the Durga Puja was celebrated on the spring season. Due to this new odd timing, the Durga Puja is popularly known as the "Akal Bodhan". (Akal = Odd timing, Bodhan = Puja.)
Celebration : As discussed previously, the Durga Puja is the biggest festival of the Bengali community. That's why, Durga Puja is hugely celebrated in the West Bengal region. People buy new clothes for the Durga Puja. Pandal hopping, pushpanjali, eating special dishes are now important part of the Durga Puja celebration. Young to Old and people of every religion, linguistic preferences, enjoy the Durga Puja in the West Bengal region, and even in the foreign countries also. On the fourth day of Durga Puja, which is known as Bijaya dashami, the idols are immersed in the nearby rivers. The immersion program is also celebrated by hugging each other, taking blessings of elder, playing with Sindur, and sharing sweets with the closed ones.
