Football is a sport which has played an exceptionally large part in American culture and is arguably the most popular sport in America. Football clubs, rituals and tailgating all stem from the popularity of this sport. In the sport's biggest event, the Super Bowl, millions of spectators nationwide are sure to watch the game whether they are fans of the teams or not. During the regular season, diehard football fans will even go as far as worshipping and idolizing their favorite players and teams. There is a myriad of ways in which football has affected people and there is not a place a person can travel to and not discover some form of football culture at work. While baseball is our pastime, because of football's nearly unparalleled effect on the citizens of America, it can be said that football is our passion. Whether it comes from a professional team, a college team, or even a high school team, practically everyone in America is impacted in some way by football.
Football's impact on American youth can be seen very early in a child's years, but when a person enters middle school, it seems their lives are personally affected by it. In these years a student is able to play football for his school. A boy will have the opportunity to join the football team where his own school will cheer for him and his teammates. Even girls are affected by this sport as several of them will decide to become school cheerleaders. The cheerleaders must try out just as a football player would and just like the football players, only the best will make the team. It becomes a significant part of their lives just as football becomes a big part of the lives of the new football players. In these years rivalries can be formed between two schools, further impacting students of the school. Even posters and a few simple advertisements will decorate parts of the school for a big upcoming game.
Last Sunday most interesting football match was played between our school and Ispat Higher Secondary School, Rourkela at Barabati Stadium, Cuttack. Large crowds of students and spectators had come to witness the match at the stadium. Both the teams were evenly matched. So the match was well-contested. The referee was extremely smart and very impartial.
The referee whistle at exact 4:30 a.m. The two teams entered the ground in their uniforms. We won the toss and choose the side. I played as centre forward.
It was a brisk game from the very start. We kicked the ball and made a dash. The Rourkela half-backs checked us and kicked the ball flying back. The captain of other team once kicked the ball so well that the goal was sure. Our goalkeeper, however, held it in his hand and very cleverly saved the goal. The game was quite interesting, as the teams were well-balanced. The ball was now flying on one side and now on that. The referee whistled and it was interval.
Both the teams had light refreshments. After 10 minutes the referee whistled. The teams changed sides and the game started again. The players now showed themselves in their best form. The passing, the heading and the hard but long kicks of the full backs were simply fine. It seemed as if the match would end in a draw. There were only 5 minutes left. We got a penalty kick in our favour. The captain of our team kicked the ball so well that it passed through the poles. There were loud cheers all around. Shouts of " Hurrah " rent the air. The other team played very nicely for the remaining time. They did their best to equalise, but in vain. They were racing against time. Then went the long whistle. Thus we won the match by one goal to zero. We were cheered. Our players then dispersed in high spirits.
It was a very exciting match. Both the teams played with vigour and enthusiasm. Indeed everybody present enjoyed the match immensely
