An essay on gray as a writer of odes
Explanation:
Thomas Gray was an English poet, letter writer, classical scholar, and Cambridge University professor who lived from December 26, 1716, to July 30, 1771. Elegy is his most famous work. In 1751, he published a poem he wrote in a country churchyard.
Thomas Gray was born in Cornhill, London, to a milliner and an exchange broker. He was the fifth of twelve children born to Philip and Dorothy Gray, and the only one to survive childhood. After his mother left his abusive father, he stayed with her. His uncle was a master at Eton College, where he received his education. As seen by his Ode on a Distant Prospect of Eton College, he remembered his schooldays as a period of immense enjoyment. Gray was a gentle and educated young man who spent his time studying.Gray was a gentle and intellectual young man who preferred to read rather than participate in sports. Rather than attending college, he stayed with his uncle. Horace Walpole, son of Prime Minister Robert Walpole, Thomas Ashton, and Richard West, subsequently Lord Chancellor of Ireland, were three of his closest companions at Eton. The four prided themselves on their sense of style, wit, and aesthetic awareness. Gray entered Peterhouse, Cambridge, in 1734. He thought the programme to be tedious. He penned letters to friends detailing everything he despised, including the masters ("crazy with Pride") and the Fellows ("sleepy, drunken, dull, illiterate Things."). His family wanted him to study law, so he spent most of his time as a student reading classical and current literature.. In 1738, he went on a Grand Tour of Europe with his old schoolmate Walpole, presumably at Walpole's expense. Because Walpole wanted to go to fancy parties and Gray wanted to see all the antiques, the two split up in Tuscany. A few years later, they reconciled.
