-Holi is known as the festival of colours, the carnivalesque time in the year when people throw colours at each other. It has a religious significance in Hinduism but it has mostly become a secularized form of celebrating spring with a profusion of colours.
-The Holi celebrations begin on the last day of the month of Phalgun. There is a Holika Dahan preceding the day of the festival when people gather around a bonfire and sing and dance to the accompaniment of drums.
-On Holi, people smear or spray colours on each other, depending upon whether the colour is in powder form or a solution. Everyone lets go of their social inhibitions and indulges themselves in an unabashed display of fun and frolic, engaging with friends, family and neighbours.
