1: The number of unemployed youth are fast rising in Mizoram, according to statistics revealed by the state Labour and Employment Department.
Statistics revealed that there are 64, 281 persons registered at the four employment exchange offices in Mizoram.
Though the state has seven districts, there are only four employment exchange offices.
Kolasib, Mamit and Serchhip districts fall under the jurisdiction of Aizawl and Aizawl Employment Exchange which house the highest number of registered unemployment youths in Mizoram.
At the state capital alone, there are a whopping 47,811 registered unemployed youth.
Officials at the Labour and Employment Department said that unemployment is has become an acute problem in Mizoram.
Although ranking first in literacy, many youngsters in Mizoram are jobless which can be attributed to the lack of local industries. The manufacturing sector, especially if it is labour intensive, provides for a good deal of blue collar opportunities. Also, the service sector that has been a major growth driver in the Indian economy, has not developed sufficiently in the state.
The statistics also revealed that altogether there are 10 physically handicapped persons which include five males and five females candidates.
Category-wise, there are 1,622 graduates registered at the four employment exchange offices and 405 post graduates across the state. The figure may not be reliable and accurate because when a department employs and recruits, they do not report back to the Labour and Employment Department, so the figure will be even less than what is in the register books, said an official at the department.
“When any department recruits new staff, they should go through Employment Exchange but here the case is a little different as the department directly employs people without going through the EC,” added the official.
