Howard Gardner has done exemplary work in formulating his Theory of Multiple Intelligence. 


His theory is a must for those who wish to be educationists, teachers or pedagogues. Howard Gardner of Harvard University has gave a unique contemporary theory of intelligence known as ‘Theory of Multiple Intelligence’. The theory first appeared in 1983 in his book ‘Frames of Mind: The Theory of Multiple Intelligence. According to Gardner there seven types of intelligences or categories of human abilities. They are discussed briefly below:

1.       Logical-mathematical intelligence:  Logical-mathematical intelligence is responsible for all types of abilities, talents and skills in areas related to logic and mathematics. It has to do with numerical ability,(i) deductive reasoning (ii)inductive reasoning (iii)scientific thinking including solving of logical puzzles, carrying out calculations and the like. Professionals like scientists, mathematicians and philosophers are found to have this type of intelligence in abundance.

2.        Linguistic intelligence: Linguistic intelligence is generally called verbal ability. It is responsible for all kinds of linguistic competence, abilities and skills, available in human beings. It is person’s ability to deal with grammar and in speech. It can be best divided components like (1) Syntax (2) Semantics and (3) pragmatics as well as (4) more school-oriented skills. Professionals like lawyers, lecturers, writers and lyricists, journalists and a number of other professionals exploiting Linguistic intelligence.

3.       Musical intelligence:  Musical intelligence is concerned with the abilities, talents, skills pertaining to the field of music. It may be well demonstrated through one’s abilities to produce and appreciate rhythm, pitch, texture, timbre, and appreciation of the forms of musical expressiveness. This type of intelligence is visible in a quite large population like musicians and composers.

4.       Spatial  intelligence: it is concerned with the abilities, talents and skills involving the representation and manipulation of spatial configuration and relationship: map reading, visual arts and even playing chess. Many persons like painters, architects, engineers, mechanics, surveyors, navigators, sculptors use spatial intelligence in their field of work in their own way.

5.       Bodily Kinesthetic Intelligence: It is concerned with the set of abilities, talents, and skills involved in using one’s body or its various parts to perform skillful and purposeful movements. A child may demonstrate such intelligence in moving in controlled manner in response to different musical and verbal stimuli or bending different body parts in organized sports. Professionals like athletes, dancers, actors, and surgeons may be seen to demonstrate a high degree of bodily kinesthetic intelligence in their respective fields.  

6.       Inter-personal Intelligence: Inter-personal Intelligence consists of the abilities to understand others i.e. individuals other than oneself and one’s relations to others. In addition it includes the ability to act productively, based on the understanding of others. The knowledge and understanding of others is the quality that is needed for social interactions in one’s day to day life. in practical life this type of intelligence is visible among teachers, psychotherapists, sales-men, politicians, and religious leaders.  

Intra-personal Intelligence: It consists of knowledge of the internal aspects of oneself (understanding of self); access to one’s own feelings and emotions. In other words, intra-personal intelligence consists of an individual’s abilities to know his own self.  It includes knowledge and understanding of one’s own cognitive strengths, styles of mental functioning, as well as one’s feelings, range of emotions, and skills to utilize one’s fund of knowledge in practical situations. In our practical life this type of intelligence is demonstrated by saints, mahatmas, rishis, and yogis.
