English is an international language, and it is one of the foreign languages that many students want to learn. Success in learning English means master not only language skills but also language components. There are four language skill, listening, speaking, reading, and writing. In addition, there are three language components that are equally important to master the language. They are grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. Grammar is considered as one of the most important as well as the most difficult components in learning language.

Grammar has a fundamental role in giving meaning in a sentence. Thornbury (2002:1) views grammar as the elements which deal with description of the rules that govern how a language’s sentences are formed.…show more content…

Relative pronouns are very important in making complex sentences. They are used to combine two simple sentences into one complex sentence, or combine independent clause and dependent clause into one complex sentence. To avoid repetition in the two simple sentences, it is better to make up those sentences into one complex sentence using relative pronouns. For example: (1) Felipe lives in Indonesia. (2) Felipe is Brazilian. These two sentences are combined by relative pronouns “who” be like (3) Felipe who is Brazilian lives in Indonesia.

Regarding to the complex sentence, it is no doubt that college students are expected to write reports, journals, or any academic writing products. The ability of composing complex sentences is needed in this way. One way students can improve their syntax is by combining sentences using relative pronouns. Not only does the practice of combining sentences assist students with syntax, but also improvements in syntax directly affect written composition. On the other hand, relative pronouns in complex sentences are used in many paragraphs and textbooks. It cannot be avoided that students are expected to comprehend those sentences well. Therefore, it can be concluded that the ability of using relative pronouns in combining sentences is very important to help students produce as well as comprehend the complex sentences
