International day of natural disaster reduction

13th October is recognised as the day for natural disaster reduction globally. This day is to recognize how people and communities around the world actively participate in reducing the risk to natural calamities.  This year, it's main aim is to reduce the number of people affected by natural disasters every year by 2030.

The UN general assembly called for this day in 1989. The wanted to have control over natural disasters. These controlling methods includes mitigation, and preparedness. This day would be proved successful only by coordination, collaboration and cooperation of individuals and communities.

The Sendai group launched a campaign last year, named United nations office for disaster risk reduction (UNISDR) where they centered on 7 targets to reduce disaster risk effect. This year’s target is focussed on prevention, protection and reducing the number of people affected by disasters

Here is the list of it's aims over the few past years:

2000: Disaster Prevention, Education and Youth
Youth being the future of any country, they are taught the basic to do's when a natural calamity strikes.

2001: Countering disasters, targeting vulnerability.
Vulnerability is when certain individuals or communities are more prone to get affected the worse due to a natural disaster. Eg: Divorced women and physically handicapped.
As vulnerability is increasing, these groups are being mobilized before the disaster with the help of hazard mapping.

2002: Sustainable mountain development.
People in mountainous regions are more prone to harmful calamities. Thus, here, they will be tried to be prevented.

2003: Turning the tide.

In 2003, calamities that occur due to water, such as floods will be prevented with estimated before time predictions. Almost 90% of calamities occur due to water.

2004: Today's disasters for tomorrow's hazards.
The offices and organizations are expected to take preventive measures before in hand so that they don't cause any harm.

2005: Microfinance and disaster risk reduction.
Poor effected with disasters would be given a small amount of microcredit in order to help them recover.

2006: Disaster risk reduction begins at schools.
Children learn their basics in schools. thus, basic education on do's during a disaster will be given.

2007: Challenging world's educational institutions.
Disaster risk reduction requires education. Thus, everyone irrespective of age will be taught about disasters.

2008: Disaster risk reduction is everyone's business.
All organizations, offices and individuals are expected to join hands together to tackle the problems due to disasters in the form of donations.

2009: Hospitals safe from disasters.
All hospitals must be located in a place that is safe from all natural disasters.

2010: My city is getting ready.
Countries such as Haiti, Chile and Pakistan get together with International day of natural disaster risk reduction.

2011: Making children and youth a part.
Strong education would be given to the 5-18 year olds about the risks and tackling methods of disasters.

2012: Women and girls.
This year, women and girls will be given education and credit if meet with any natural disaster.

2013: Living with disability and disasters.

Hi there!

This special day is celebrated on 13th October year. This day was introduced by the United Nations Organization in1989.

This day is celebrated to promote a global culture of risk-awareness and disaster reduction. On this day, people from around the world come together to raise awareness about disaster management and discuss how they can reduce it and how people die in disasters. They also start campaigns, and effective actions, plans, etc, to reduce the chance of people dying every year because of hazardous disasters. Everyone contributes for a better life, and a safe livelihood.

Almost all countries face natural disasters. The natural disasters can be very harmful, like- earthquakes, cyclones, tsunamis, etc. On this day, people are informed about such disasters and the result for it. They are also told how to look after themselves and be careful in such situations. They are also told the precautions to be taken, so that the population doesn't reduce, and the people are safe.
People give speeches and speaks about it in schools and colleges.

Last year, the campaign 'Sendai Seven' was introduced to reduce the number of people dying in such natural disasters. They now have early warning systems to predict, and can save many lives.
