A century ago lions thrived and roamed freely across the African continent, however, due to a multitude of factors such as trophy killings, conflicts with humans and loss of habitat space, the population of African lions today is only 10% of what it used to be. Regardless of these killings, lions still remain a globally ionic animal, as well as being part of the ‘big five’ animal group- the ultimate goal for tourists coming on safaris. Without well-defined property rights according to Shogren and Taylor (2008), society’s ability to allocate and manage resources effectively is constrained; with lions being non-market goods, a market must be established in order to create a baseline for estimating the value of lions (Sellar, Chavas)

The Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) was first proposed by Ciriacy-Wantrup in 1947, and has since then has become an increasingly popular “technique for evaluating goods that are not physically traded” (Nomura and Akai, 2004: 455) with this method having the ability in “providing an accurate prediction of real market behaviour” (Horowitz, McConnell and Murphy, 2012: 8). The CVM method relies upon the intentions of individuals’ willingness-to-pay (WTP) for a given resource, and in this case the resource being lion conservation. Most African lions are situated inside national parks such as the Kruger and Serengeti national parks, and this creates imaginary management boundaries for authorities. The CVM can be used here in order to understand the differing value of lion conservation for both tourists and locals through asking these groups about their WTP for lion conservation; therefore, to calculate ‘true’ WTP values for lion conservation, separate CV surveys should be used for tourists and locals in understanding the values these groups place on lion conservation. To carry out the WTP survey participants should be given background information about the reduction in lion populations over time, future reductions if the status quo remains, and then asked their willingness to pay for lion conservation which would protect these animals....
