Muthuvel Karunanidhi was born on 3rd June, 1924 in Thirukuvalai village in Nagapattinam district of Tamilnadu state.
He was chosen as chief minister of the state 5 times between 1969 and 2011.
He entered Tamilnadu politics as a youth leader of the students wing and actively volunteered in Anti-Hindi agitations.
He is one of the few politicians to have won in almost all state assembly elections since 1957.
He was popularly known as Kalaignar by the DMK party supporters, which chose him as president 10 times.
Besides being a politician, he was a well known Tamil writer known for his short stories, plays, novels and cinema scripts.
He received many awards and honorary doctorates for his contribution to Tamil literature.
He died on 7th August, 2018 at the age of 94 in his state Tamilnadu.
He left a family of 6 children including MK Stalin expected to be his political successor.
