Journalism and culture are dominant, impactful pillars of society, sharing an inextricable relationship. Yet, the extent and influence of this relationship resists absolute categorisation, given its symbiotic nature, and fluid parameters. To assert journalism exclusively or exhaustively reflects culture would be flawed, as systemic social, political, and financial factors also shape cultural definitions.

Anybody who follows satire news on Indian Television is sure to be a familiar with Sagarika Ghose. She is an Indian TV journalist who till recently worked as Deputy Editor at CNN-IBN where she was often seen noisily shouting ‘news over noise’. She has previously worked at other popular Indian satire news organizations like Times of India.

She studied at St. Stephens and Oxford and is a Roadies Rhodes scholar. Her husband, Rajdeep Sardesai, is a senior journalist popularly known as The Grand Old Monk of India.

She most famously coined ‘Internet Hindus’ as a derogatory term for every Hindu on Internet who doesn’t agree with her. But Internet Hindus being Internet Hindus took it up as a badge of honour much to her chagrin. Some of them even fondly call her ‘Internet Bindu’.

She recently rewrote the Idea of Indian Secularism by defining it as “sub-continental spirituality of shared shrines that make up our unique plural faith! Nothing to do with ghisa pita secularism.” Social scientists all over the World are working round the clock in trying to understand this mind-numbing new concept.
