Centuries of alien rule have impoverished India. There might be son Some people who might have led good lives even during the alien rule, but the lot of the masses was miserable. Freedom came from the foreign yoke and then the urgent task before the Government was to ameliorate the economic lot of the masses of the country. Emulating Russia's experience, We started planning for development from 1951 and formulated five year plans, We have completed nearly six decades of planning. We have completed ten five year plans and have started the eleventh five year plan in 2007 which will be completed in 2012. During this period of planning we have achieved substantial progress in almost every field of life and the India of 2009 seems to be far different from the India of 1950. We have achieved phenomenal progress in agriculture. The Green Revolution has already materialised and, we are growing self- sufficient in matters of food. Besides agriculture, other areas of life have also benefited from planning. There has been a good expansion of educational facilities. The number of schools, colleges and universities has increased severalfold. The percentage
of literacy has gone up substantially. Medical facilities have been reached in the farthest corners of India. Hundreds of hospitals and dispensaries have been established, drugs and medicines are being manufactured indigenously. Science in India is on a march of rapid progress. Hundreds of scientific laboratories and research centres have come up to work on a variety of aspects. Industrialization of India is growing fast and we are steadily tending to become self-sufficient in many items produced by domestic industries. Our dent in nuclear and space research has not only raised our prestige in the world but has opened for us vast vistas of development and economic progress. Militarily India now ranks as one of the major powers in the world. thanks to the very encouraging successes achieved in developing new varieties of defence equipment and technologies, We have made rapid stide in information technology and information revolution is just round the Corner.
