Creating Magnificent Image
Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of the Statue of Unity on Sardar Patel's 138th birth anniversary, i.e. 31st October, 2013. To lay the foundation stone and start with the construction, the sadhu island hill was flattened from 70 to 55 meters.
After a lot of research by architects and engineers, the construction of the grand statue began in 2014. It took 56 months to complete this statue. It included 15 months of research and planning and 40 months of construction. It took 2 months to handover it. The architects and artists appointed for this work observed and studied the statues of Sardar Patel established in India.
After a lot of analyzes and discussions, it was decided to come together with an idol built on the Ahmadabad International Airport, unanimously, but very large in size. Statue of Unity is located at an altitude of 182 meters. The total height of the memorial with base is 240 meters. To match the number of seats in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly, the height of the statue (182 meters) was cleverly chosen.
The project was supervised by a consortium of Meinhardt Group, Michael Graves and Associates and Tuner Construction. The total cost of the project was approximately 3000 million. This was the lowest bid received for the construction of the statue. Larsen & Toubro made this bid and got the contract. The cost not only included the construction of the monument, but its design and maintenance cost for the next fifteen years was also included.
About 250 engineers and over 3,000 laborers were employed to build this huge memorial. Structural and reinforced steel, bronze and iron were used to construct the statue.
