According to mythology, when Lord Krishna fought for his grandson Aniruddha with the army of Banasur there was bloodshed all around the place and the whole place was filled with blood and so it was named Tezpur and is known by the name till this date. It is the district headquarters of all the administrative offices which falls under Sonitpur district which was previously known as the Darrang district during the British rule in India.
