The Dangerous Day of My Life

The spooky experience in my life was during the tourism in ex-Yugoslavia right before the war hit in 1990 or so.

There were NO tourists it's like we were the only ones there for that. And no one was out in the touristy areas but this doesn't mean everyone was hidden inside either.

My parents were kinda crazy like that ... oh yeah let's go to Yugoslavia with the three kids when a war might break out tomorrow.

We did hear a few machine guns but never saw anything crazy.

We then went to Bulgaria because my father was setting up a humanitarian organization to send medication there.

Much needed help for a country that had little to no meds, the land where medical operations were done while drunk because there were no anesthetics available because of costs and availability.

This was all so crazy. And to get gas for the car. oh lord that was impossible.

We had a diesel engine and apparently in the eastern block countries it was mostly the military that had such vehicules.

And even if a station might have had some there were lines of 50+ cars to get gas that could take days to get there.

A few times my father went out early morning trying to get gas and some places that sold gas to the military provided him with some and told him "this is only for the military if I get caught I'll be killed so don't tell on me please".

Crazy parents ... once the father while coming back from a trip to Bulgaria for the organization, while driving through ex-yugoslavia to get back to France was unable to pay for the toll.

Little did he know that the week or so that he was in Bulgaria the currency had been taken out and only US dollars were considered any good. Queue argument with toll booth guy, everyone in the car not having a clue what was going on, and then security people with machine guns showing up to "take care of business". Luckily the team had some dollars and were able to get on their way...
