Marriage is a very beautiful and important part of our lives. When two people decide to spend their lives together, getting married is the final step. We live in 21st century; however, in some parts of the world, who you will get married to still depends on your parents' decision. This terrible aspect of young peoples' lives is shown in the story "Marriage is a private affair" by Chinua Achebe. Old traditions, conflict between generations, and love that stands over an argument, these are the major characteristics shown in Achebe's story.
In many countries, all over the world, there are still old traditions that rule in front of law and common sense. One of these traditions is that parents are choosing a partner for their son or daughter. That tradition takes a major part of Achebe's story. One of the main characters is deeply in love with a girl from a different part of the country that he met during studies in the city of Lagos. He has to face his father and confess about his true love and plans for wedding. I must say it is not an easy situation knowing that father has decided to whom his son will be married. The final decision of our main character is unacceptable to his father. It leads to a long-term conflict between father and son, which in my opinion was the best solution. Why would I let someone to steer my life? For me it's intolerable.
