Incident That Made Me Nervous.....
Speaking on the stage has always been my Achilles heel. I never did it right whenever I tried to. The last time I felt the nervousness and embarrassment on account of it was when I participated in inter-house declamation contest at school.
People give long lectures on all round development! They almost inspire you to do the impossible at times. I am a born sportsperson. I can play, run and sweat like an animal in the play field. However, stage makes me feel butterflies in my stomach. I begged my House Master not to select me for the job; but he turned a deaf ear to my pleas.
I did my best to learn the 3 minutes long speech, and I could not learn it by heart. Even the English teacher tried her, best bit to no avail. Everybody thought I would do it well finally. But I knew the debacle beforehand.
Finally the day came. The entire auditorium was packed to capacity. Participants delivered their speeches to thundering applause. Meanwhile I kept attempting to master my speech. My name was announced! I plodded to the podium. I looked into the mike; my throat dried up; no words issued from my mouth. The silence and the fear choked me. I could not speak a word! I said ‘sorry’ into the mike and came away from the stage.
The embarrassment I felt cannot be described in words. However, my House Master behaved very understandingly. He patted me for trying sincerely.
HOPE IT HELPS YOU.
