Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey and Sir Thomas Wyatt both, usually, are regarded as the progenitors of the productive era of English poetry which is often termed to be the golden age in the development of English lyrics. They were the real Elizabethan souls and tended to be the followers of humanist tradition. This humanist proclivity made them interested in the refined lyrical poetry of the French and Italian poets.

They attempted to demonstrate in their own works that English, too, was a language flexible and elegant enough for court poetry. Exhibiting Skillful experimentation with metrics, they imitated a number of the verse forms popular with the Continent, including the sonnet, ottava rima, terza rima, and the rondeau. The major portion of their poetry is influenced by the Petrarchan convention of lyrical writing largely. Furthermore, they seem to be bridging the gap between the Elizabethan and medieval eras through their lyrical excellence.
