Answer:

The position of women in ancient India has been a very complicated one because of the paradoxical statements in different religious scriptures and sometimes in the same text at different places. Some have described their status as ‘equals to men’, while others have held not only in disrespect but even in positive hatred.

This is why it has presented many problems to sociologists while evaluating women’s status in India. The cultural history of India reveals that in India theoretically women enjoyed the status of devi (goddess) as described in many religious texts of Hindus, the majority community in India.

Position of women in Harappan society:

Explanation:

  • Ethnographically, the Harappans can be divided into four classes - Proto-Australian, Mediterranean, Alpine and Mongollabh. The inhabitants of Sindh and Punjab ate wheat and barley as food. The inhabitants of Rangpur and Surkotada preferred to eat rice and millet. They obtained oil and fat from sesame, mustard and possibly ghee. The cultivation of sugarcane is not known. Honey was used to sweeten the food. Apart from this, the Harappans also consumed meat. Thus said It may be noted that the Sandhavas were both vegetarian and non-vegetarian. Their clothing was of both cotton and wool. Both men and women wore ornaments. Ornaments were made of gold, silver and ruby. Ivory teeth and conch were used for ornamentation and bangles. The poor people used to wear conch shells, shells and clay ornaments. The abundance of materials for hair decoration and make-up proves that the Indus people lived an elegant life. Copper mirrors and ivory combs were found. Evidence of lipstick has been found from Chanhudaro. They used to use cosmetics.
  • The place of ladies in old India has been an exceptionally muddled one due to the confusing assertions in various strict sacred writings and here and there in the similar text at better places. Some have portrayed their status as 'equivalents to men', while others have held in slight as well as even in certain scorn.
