SCHOOL EDUCATION DURING PANDEMIC
Respected teachers and my dear friends,
I am Ethan Issac
Today I am going to share some of my thoughts on the topic ‘School education during pandemic’
The COVID-19 pandemic is one of the deadliest crises the world has faced over the years. This pandemic has
crushed world economies and locked up all of us in homes. Also this pandemic has created the largest
disruption of education systems in history, affecting nearly 1.6 billion learners in more than 190 countries and
all continents. Closure of schools and other learning spaces have impacted 94 percent of the world’s student
population, up to 99 percent in low and lower-middle income countries.
This crisis in education system is unprecedented and threatens to extend beyond this generation and erase
our decades of progress. School closures impact not only students, teachers and families, but have far-
reaching economic and societal consequences. The impact is more severe for disadvantaged children and their
families including interrupted learning, compromised nutrition, childcare problems and consequent economic
cost to families who cannot work.
The effect of school closure on COVID-19 cases and mortality has been examined in multiple studies. In a study
that looked specifically at school closure in the United States, closure of schools was associated with 1.37
million fewer cases and 40600 fewer deaths from COVID-19 in a six-week study period. Thus school closures
has helped to keep the virus at bay and controlling the spread.
Online learning has become a critical lifeline for education, as governments seek to minimize the potential for
community transmission. Technology can enable teachers and students to access specialized materials well
beyond textbooks, in multiple formats and in ways that can bridge time and space. Due to the COVID-19
pandemic, many schools across the world began conducting classes via videotelephony software such as
Zoom, Google meet, Webex meet etc.
UNESCO has made tens recommendations for engaging in online learning. I am not elaborating on the
recommendations but it directs to use the most relevant teaching tools which most of the students can access,
solutions to address psychosocial challenges before teaching, support to teachers and parents etc. It also
suggests creating communities of teachers, parents and school managers to address sense of loneliness or
helplessness, sharing of experience and discussion on strategies.
Thus there are many advantages and disadvantages for online learning. Teachers are facing greater challenge
of not getting a proper feedback from students. Students without reliable internet access or technology
struggle to participate in digital learning. Governments across the world are taking steps for providing facilities
to such students. Conducting exams and assessing the student is another challenge for online education
system.
On the other hand, this crisis has stimulated innovation within the education sector. We have seen innovative
approaches in support of education and training continuity – from radio and television, take-home packages,
various distance learning solutions etc.
As these are challenging times, governments should plan thoroughly when the time is ready for reopening
schools by ensuring safety of all. Education financing should be protected and should strengthen the resilience
of education systems for equitable and sustainable development. The positive change in teaching and learning
should be embraced. It is the responsibility of governments and the communities to stay true to principles and
conduct reforms, so that, not only will the children regain their promised future, but all education
stakeholders find their role in making it happen.
