Every once in a while you run into a modern day Luddite, someone who sees only bad in technology. As a lover of technology and someone who has spent their career trying to advance technology, this can be difficult for me. My initial reaction is to ask them how they got to work, point out that they didn’t die from dysentery as a child, or knock their cell phone out of their hands. None of those reactions are constructive, although they would feel good. So instead, I try to think about the good technology has done in a less snarky way.
And one key area that is becoming more and more important is how technology can bring people together and break down barriers. This is not new. Technology has been making the world a smaller place since we started using sticks to beat better paths through the jungle. But the modern communication and transportation technology is unprecedented, and they are changing our attitudes daily.
MASS MEDIA
The most significant impact, that one could say started with printing presses, is mass media. It is very easy for different races, religions, or socioeconomic groups to rarely interact. When that happens they loose understanding and start down the road of dehumanizing one another. Mass media, when deployed properly, can use entertainment and information to allow these groups to get to know each other, to build empathy and understanding.
MESSAGING
Texting and chatting are new. It allows people all over the world to interact and bond easily and freely. My teenage son regularly chats with people all over the world when playing video games or complaining about his favorite soccer team. He has built a relationship with a kid that lives in the working-class neighborhood of London, as well as the lush suburbs of Connecticut. Messaging allows for communication when and where it is convenient and does not require instant back and forth like verbal communication.
SOCIAL PLATFORMS
This is by far the most controversial new technology, but I see relationships being created almost every day on social media. I have “friends” that I met through people who I met through work that I communicate with and have gotten to know in ways impossible without social media. And because of that, I understand their different point of view, their struggles, and what they value. People and points of view I would not know otherwise.
TRANSLATION
This technology is just coming online but may have the greatest impact. Language is still a barrier. If we want to build relationships across borders and cultures, we need to remove the fact that we simply can’t communicate with people who do not speak a common language. Batch translation is working now, and we will soon have instant translation where the algorithms understand and can translate nuances unique to each language. This will be a huge change when combined with the other technologies.
DOUBLE EDGE SWORD
For every advantage I’ve listed, the Luddites will list three disadvantages. There are predators on message boards, social platforms can keep you from interacting with your own family, and mass media is easily turned to evil ends. But history has shown us that if we look at technology with honest eyes and apply it correctly, it increases the quality of our lives and can tear down the barriers and mistrust that have haunted us.
