Answer:

In 2011 when I was sailing as a first ship 3rd Mate, I had a horrible experience.

It started off one Sunday when I ate Shrimps for dinner and went back to my cabin for a nap. The next morning I woke up with the left side of my face swollen. We had just departed Singapore and were on our way to Aqaba, Jordan with halts at Saudi Arabia and Egypt. A round trip back to Singapore is about 7 weeks.

So, I ignored the swelling as I usually hate making big of small problems. Little did I know that the next 7 weeks would be the toughest days of my life. The swelling didn’t die down and a week had passed. All of a sudden i started getting head migraines. These migraines kept getting more painful as days passed. It felt like a thousand needles penetrating my brain. We were in the middle of the ocean.

Finally we reached Egypt and I thought I’d go for a check up to the doctor to know whats happening to me. The agent at the port had his excuses that Cairo is too far from the port that we were in and by the time I’d come back, the ship might sail off. So the Captain decided to cancel my trip to the doctor.

Had to go back to work as I didn’t have anyone to cover up my hours. There we moments that I just couldn’t eat or sleep. I remember staying up for almost a week, coughing blood and banging my head to the walls (bulkhead) of the cabin. I felt my head was gonna explode any moment. I cried but there was no one to hear me. All the advice the Captain could offer was moisturize your feet while sleeping. Little did he know that sleep was just a distant dream. I managed to put on a brave face day in day out for those 2 weeks on our way back to Singapore.

On reaching Singapore, they sent me to a ear specialist even after repeatedly telling them it’s my brain that’s hurting and not my ear. The Ear Specialist tells me everything is normal and gives me some ear drops. We set sail for China.

On reaching Chiwan, China while i was on duty, I collapsed and couldn’t take the pain that was breaking me from inside. I informed the Captain that I cant take it anymore and I needed to be sent to a hospital. He told me, “It’s China, if you go out, people wont understand what you speak. We’ll send you to see a doctor in Hong Kong (our next port )” which was the next morning.

On reaching Hong Kong, they took me too a hospital. I waited patiently for the doctor to examine me. He checked my blood pressure and then and there told me that I had to get admitted as my Blood Pressure was as high as 185, It was only then that I informed my parents that I was in a hospital in Hong Kong. After various tests and scan to the brain and pain killers for 4 long days they called a specialist and tested some spinal fluid to which they found out I had Meningitis. The doctor informed me that you’re lucky that we have detected this now or if we were 24–36 hrs late you would have been paralyzed as excessive water had collected in the membrane of my brain. I had lost 12 kilos by now. I couldn’t recognize myself in the mirror. The treatment lasted 15 more days with tons of fluids pumped into me. My mom managed to come visit me in Hong Kong. I still remember crying to her and asking her, “Why me mom? I’m still 23, why does God want me to come to him so early?”

With great pain I completed the treatment. After 15 days I finally stood up on my feet, packed my bags and thanked everyone that took care of me in that ward.

I am grateful to be given a second chance in Life.

Maybe it wasn’t my time yet!
