In post Mauryan era, there was development of regional or local styles of sculptural art. Important places where this art forms originated were Gandhara and Mathura in north and Amravati in Krishna-Godavary valley.

Gandhara school- One can witness the standing or seated Buddha statues in Greek-Roman style as one of the characteristics of Gandhara school of sculpture. The patrons of this type of art were Kushanas and Shakas. Many art pieces of this school have been found in Jalalabad, Begram, Taxila, Hadda.

Mathura school – This school is known to have produced sculptural art work in large quantities. More importance was given to facial expressions than body postures. Hindu gods were sculpted in this school like Shiva, Goddess Durga, varah and Vishnu etc.

Amaravati- This school produced beauty of the individual bodies with variety of poses depicting the possibility of human form. This art flourished during the period of Satvahanas. It also depicted narrative scenes of the Jataka tales. The stories of kings and queens were depicted with minute details.

Thus sculpture as a form of art flourished in post Mauryan period.
