The vernacular press act 1878 was modelled on the irish press laws. According to this act , the government would keep a check on what was printed in the vernacular newspapers and magazines and if anything appeared seditious the newspaper was warned and if the warning was ignored the press was liable to be seized and the printing machinery confiscated.
