This was said by the main female protagonist of the book series as well as the show -Elena Gilbert.

This is absolutely true. Even if we grow thick skin around ourselves just to avoid being hurt by anybody, we still are haunted quite often with the memories of a person who used to be with us at some point in our life but is now lost for ever.

Understand the fact that they are lost does not help us in forgetting their memories. We cry, we sob, we mourn even though we know that there is nothing we could do about that. We plead to our head and heart to stop thinking about that person's memories at least long enough for us to inhale, exhale, and repeat. We can try to forget what happened, but we can never forget what and how we felt.

But we perhaps forget it sometimes that people always remember the worst day of their lives. It becomes a part of themselves. Also, do you know that some people just come into your life just to teach you how to let go. So, that we could know how it feels to lose someone very dear. You don’t realize how much you love and care for someone until you see them go.

In the end, its your choice whether to live with their memories or move ahead in life forgetting about them. Though forgetting is never the easiest part to do.
