The Yamuna River, like all other holy rivers in India, has been massively polluted for decades now. once used to be the lifeline of the Indian capital. Currently, is no more than a large, open sewer that is choking with industrial and domestic discharge that includes plastic, flowers and debris from an annual Hindu festival, Durga Puja, during which hundreds of idols are immersed in the river.The river has been declared ‘dead’, with its water not suitable for bathing at most places but in 2017 thousands of people visited the banks of the Yamuna River to celebrate the Chhath festival and brave the waterbody’s pollution in the name of faith and took the event’s traditional holy bath.

Sewage treatment and prevent mixing with river water:  Proper treatment of the household water in order to become safe environmentally. Adequate care can be considered so that water does not get contaminated and gets mixed with the environment. Human and animal waste need to be prevented from mixing through multiple sources. Solution includes construction of pit toilets and sewage treatments in proper manner.

2. Treatment of waste before discharging in river: Factories need to treat the effluent wastes before discharge. Toxic material need to be treated chemically and transformed into material harmless to environment. Finally, factories can try to recycle wastewater.

3. Public Awareness: People need to be aware regarding the effects of water pollution. Voluntary organizations can preach from door-to-door about environmental issues. Students can advocate regarding health education.
