We as humans often complain and crib when things do not go our way. No matter how much we have, there is always a tinge of disatisfaction within us. I too was sombody like that, till this incident happened. It is not a big incident but it did bring about a little change in my perspective and attitude.
So the year was 2011. I was doing my first year bachelors at a college in Chennai. I was staying at a hostel as my folks were in Kerala. For a long weekend my father decided to pay me a visit. That Sunday we decided to meet some relatives at the other end of Chennai. We took the local train. It was the month of March. Those familiar with Chennai would know the scorching heat of Chennai during that time.
So a hot March afternoon found my dad and me seated in a day train. I was cribbing about the heat, the fan that was not working and, the flies that swarmed the station. I noticed a family sitting opposite to us. They were a couple with two toddlers.
I could sense that they were not well off. The man looked like a daily wage labourer. They seemed like they had nothing but a certain positivity drew my attention to them.
One of the children started crying. The father carried her and started paying with her. The mother took a broken piece of toy from the cloth bag she had with her. Seeing the toy, the child grew excited and so did the older child. Both the parents laughed and played with the kids. They seemed to be in their world of happiness.
To an outsider the toy looked broken but to the children it was the best thing. The fading colours gave them happiness. Above that the love and attention they got from their parents was even more.
Their love and care towards one another would have made them ignore the heat. I was moved to tears. Here was a poor family who drew happiness out of the small things in life and on the other hand, there was me who had all I wanted yet cribbed all day.
This was an incident that changed me. I understood that we may spend our lives chasing big things. While these may give us happiness, it is the small joys of life that stay in our memories forever.
Our journey on the train ended soon but the journey of life continues as we learn a lot of things from the stations in between.
