"Trade does not necessarily work for equality", this notion relates to the concept of various types of equality; the main one being gender equality.

Trade generally is the exchange of goods and services in order to gain monetary benefit among different parties. Its role in the global world is that of an important one, considering that the entire world has developed into a global village. As the shrinkage of the world continues, communication across borders tends to become easier by the day. With growing globalization opportunities rise, however, objectives of trade vary as well.

Thus it would be fair to make the statement that trade doesn't necessarily work for promoting equality because trade among states and parties exists to serve the main purpose of profit maximization. In regard to this, the aim is of gaining economies of scale via medium of expansion, in which target is that of cutting costs. Many investors do not look at investing in women's work and opportunities for other genders as a promising one. Thus, as expansion takes place, its limited to the specific male hierarchy getting opportunities. Developmental actors and policy makers, still, even in this century do not design the work and projects while keeping in mind the situation of a woman in mind. The ones who are ambitious and competitive tend to pave their way, however the others miss out on opportunities, especially in developing countries where culture is a problem for women who want to work.

Another fact is that in businesses people think that women are not fit for labour work as well as handing emotions. According to Goleman's theory of emotional intelligence. those in business need to be sound and able to handle difficult situations. Many still believe women to be extremely emotional and in times of crisis they might not be able to take the pressure. Furthermore, another factor of interference becomes the trade policies which are shaped by the type of societies people live in. This is related to the concept of gender inequalities existing which affect trade strategies for competitiveness; hence trade not necessarily promoting gender equality. For example in developing countries, the society has a specific mindset. Imagine how many makeup brands would be willing to make a transgender or an eunuch as their brand's face.
