Punnett square can be effectively used to understand typical monohybrid cross conducted by Mendel and also to understand the law of independent assortment.

Explanation:

Punnett square is developed by a british geneticist RC Punnett. It is a square diagram.For example, in the Mendelian monohybrid cross it is used to determine the probability of all possible genotypes of F₂ (Filial₂) generations. Mendel crossed the tall (TT) and dwarf (tt) pea plants and he found that all the offsprings in the F₁ generation  were tall and none was dwarf. Then he self pollinated the tall plants of the F₁ and found that the some of the offsprings were dwarf in F₂ generations.To understand the process a file has been attached.

So, it can be concluded that the production of gametes by the parents, the formation of the zygotes, the F₁ and F₂ generations can be well understood by a diagram called Punnett square.
