Starch can also be called as carbohydrates or glucose . Be it glucose , starch or carbohydrates , all of them provide energy to one organism or another just in a different mode of nutrition . So , to test whether this energy giving nutrient is present in a food item or not we can do a small test to find it out . The test involves taking the food item we want to test , in a tube and adding 2 to 3 drops of iodine solution in it . If adding of the iodine solution changes the colour of the food item into blue - black , it means that the food item contains starch / carbohydrates/ glucose . In short if a food item changes into blue black colour , when iodine is added to it then it means that it contains starch . This test is called as a chemical iodine test .
