1. Take a smooth ball and place it on a table.  The ball does not move in any direction.   Thus any body with inertia does not change its state of rest unless acted upon by an unbalanced external force.

2. Take a smooth block of ice.  Slide it along a smooth table or floor.  The block of ice does not stop and continues to slide.  Thus anybody with inertia does not change its state of uniform motion, unless acted upon by an external force.

3.  In step 2, put a hand in the line of ice block. The ice block comes to rest.  The push force action makes ice block stop.

4. Take a smaller block of ice in step 2. Repeat step 3.  You will observe that the impact on the hand is less.  So a block having higher mass needs larger impact or force to change its state of motion.  Thus higher mass means larger inertia.
