ANSWER :
To measure the thickness of a glass plate, a spherometer is kept on a plain glass plate. The central leg of the spherometer is raised so as to create a gap between the tip of the central leg and the glass plate. When a sufficient gap is created, the test plate is inserted into the gap. The central leg is then lowered slightly so as to touch the upper surface of the test plate. The position of the line is circular scale coinciding with the vertical reference blade is taken as initial circular scale division. The test plate is then removed from its position. The central leg is lowered by rotating until it touches the glass plate. The number of rotations completed is noted. The position of the line is circular scale coinciding with the vertical reference blade is taken as final circular scale division.
THE THICKNESS OF THE BLADE IS CALCULATED BY USING THE FORMULA ;
Thickness = n × pitch + (initial csd - final csd) × LC
[ This formula is valid only when the circular scale is rotated in clockwise direction from the initial position to get final position. ]
