When peer groups have a positive influence, they are beneficial; nevertheless, when rejection or negative pressure is present, they are harmful.

  • Whether you're a soccer mom driving the latest SUV or a teen guy trying to find the perfect clothes to fit in, peer pressures play an important role in establishing who you become.
  • In addition to the influence of peers, a network of friends can make you feel less lonely and offer aid when you need it.
  • One of the most important benefits of having a peer group at any age is the support that can be obtained through a social network.
  • You are less likely to be lonely, more likely to feel like you belong, have a stronger feeling of self-worth, and feel more confident if you have a network of friends.

An expository essay on the merit and demerit of peer group can be as follows. An expository essay requires us to compound ideas and explain them with proper reasoning after giving an introduction.

  • (Introduction) Most people are part of a peer group atleast once in their lives. A peer group is nothing but a term in sociology that means a group of friends or colleagues. The importance of a peer group is immense, especially early in life. Often, those children who fail to socialize with others develop emotional problems. Peer groups may also have a negative impact on people.

  • (First idea) As children start understanding their own interests, they befried other like-minded children. This means that almost everyone gets involved in a peer group when they are very young. A peer group influences the opinions and feelings of an individual. This is true no matter what the individual's age. This is why peer groups are so important.

  • (Second idea) In addition, children who cannot be in peer groups find themselves detached from others. This creates a sense of loneliness in them. As they grow up, they develop social or mental issues. Their development is hindered and they do not become well-adjusted adults.

  • (Third idea) Despite all this, the demerits of a social group have to be kept in mind. They can influence people in the wrong way. Some become a victim of peer pressure and end up doing things they should not have done. This happens to a lot of teenagers.

  • (Conclusion) The desire to have friends and be with like-minded people makes us involved in peer groups. It is important that children are encouraged to form peer groups as it helps in their overall development. They should also be made aware of the difference between good and bad influence.
