Certain plants do not contain the pigment chlorophyll. Due to this, they cannot be autotrophic, but rather heterotrophic. They take nutrition directly from another plant, by climbing onto them. The plant from which it derives nutrition is known as the host.  

Example of parasitic plant: Cuscuta.

Insectivorous plants are carnivorous plants. They can attract and trap insects and kill them for nutrition. Such plants emit smell and exhibit colors to attract insects. Once insect falls into the trap, they close the pitcher where insect lands, and digestive juices are released into the pitcher to kill and digest the insect.

Example of insectivorous plant: Venus fly trap.
