I have a theory. I believe that WordPress is like high school and that people who blog return to the same social circles they had as teenagers. I think this same theory holds up for most work places — basically any place or situation where groups of people meet on a regular basis with one or more things in common.
I started thinking about my friends in high school. I would describe myself as someone who had friends in every category; nerdy, athletic, popular, artsy, druggy, greaser, theater geeks, straight laced, loners, odd balls and your basic boy or girl next door types. I found pieces of myself in all of these groups of people.
I think the same is true for wordpress. My blogroll, readers, and those I can’t keep up with but would like to, are an eclectic mix of individuals, people just like me who hang out on the fringe of all categories and delight in the diversity that abounds. I get a real kick out of going to some obscure blog only to find some of my other friends were already there or are regulars. When this happens, which is often, it reinforces the old proverb, “Birds of a Feather Flock Together.”
