I remember a time when there were 10 family members staying in that tiny house at the same time.

In the one bedroom, my paternal uncle (Chacha) and aunt (Chachi), along with their first-born used to sleep on the only double-bed we had.

On the floor, my Mom would make-shift our bed with the spare mattresses and blankets on which the four of us would sleep together - me, my sister, and my parents.

In the hall, on the wooden couch/bed, my Grandpa would sleep. There would be a folding bed for my Grandma, and my paternal aunt (Bua) would have the makeshift bed on the floor with another set of spare mattress and blankets.

Whenever I am reminded of those days when the peace and harmony prevailed among the family members living together in such a tiny space, I feel the greatness of my parents.

Looking at how the things turned out later with the same uncle, reinforces that feeling. Some years down the line, he grew resentful towards my parents, only God knows why, and broke all the relations with us. Yes, not even us kids were allowed to mingle with each other, such was his hatred. He came back to our house (not the same one but a bigger one that my Dad was able to get after his retirement) only at my Dad's funeral. Never before, never after.

I like to think that my parents could never do something like that to anyone who gave them shelter under their tiny roof unconditionally, especially because they were family! That’s how much sure I am of their greatness…
