The teacher might be a woman from the community where she was teaching, but just as often she was from further away and she would live with a local family during the school year.
They were cramped, like multiple families to a single room apartment cramped, had no indoor plumbing or heat, and were poorly lit (if lit at all.) Plus, there was often no ventilation, which meant that when one person got sick, everybody got sick.

Life in the 1800s was very different from how it is today. Today we have computers, phones, even little speakers we can talk to! Back then you had a battery and a working electric light. Also, back then, medicine was slow because it was very difficult to study the human body. Nowadays, we have much more improved medicines. Through the first half of the 1800s, child labor was apart of the economy in the United States. Children worked on family farms, thank goodness that's over.
