The Ajanta Caves are one of the oldest UNESCO World Heritage Sites in
India and date back to the beginning
of the era of classical Indian art(2nd to 1st centuries B.C.). They are located in Aurangabad district of Maharashtra state of India and is a major tourist attraction. They provide significant significant information about social and economic conditions of the then India.
Caves 16, 17, 1 and 2 have one of the largest surviving ancient Indian wall-paintings.They store perhaps the most magnificent masterpieces of Indian art and have some very expressive paintings. They are those masterpieces of religious art that influenced the Indian art that of the successive generations.
Though Buddha was against the idea of sculpting and painting images of him, after his death, his followers decided to paint his images so that it helped them in spreading the faith and teachings of the Buddha.
Some historical records tell us about the origins of the paintings in the cave. They say that some Buddhist monks used these caves as a monsoon retreat as well as a resting site and it was during this time that they used their creativity and time and painted the walls of the caves.
These caves were covered by jungle until they were accidentally discovered in 1819 by Jon Smith, who belonged to the 28th Cavalry hunting a tiger around the Deccan Plateau region.
There are over 30 caves in the cave complex out of which one part was completed during the Satvahana period(2nd century BCE to 1st century CE) and the other many years later during the Vakataka period(5th century). Caves 9, 10, 12 and 15 A were built during the Satavahana dynasty whereas other caves were built during the Vakataka dynasty.
They are carved out of flood basalt rock of a cliff which was formed by volcanic eruptions at the end of the Cretaceous period. The colors that were mainly used were red and yellow ochre, terra verte, lime, kaolin, gypsum, lamp black, etc. The paintings were binded using glue as the main binding material.
