Explanation:
It is true we do not live in a world of "24," where Jack Bauer is running around the country saving us from terrorist attacks for one day every year, but that does not mean that terrorism is not a threat. After reading the article "Terrorism was never a threat to U.S." (CT, Feb. 26), I realized how short sighted and narrow this article was. It solely focused on post Sept. 11 terrorist events on United States soil. That is a mistake. We must look at our past history to learn from it and evolve. There have been many terrorist attacks on U.S. soil besides Sept. 11 that should not be forgotten. For example, the attacks on our embassies in the Middle East and Africa, along with the first attack on the World Trade center in 1993, a few parking spots away from Sept. 11 only earlier. Just because some of these places are not part of the contiguous 48 states does not mean that it is not American soil nor are American's dying. Another mistake is assuming that Arab factions and Al-Qaeda are the only terrorists which the U.S. is working against or susceptible to. As James Madison explains in the federalist papers, factions are an inevitable part of our society, founded in disagreement and variety of opinions. Al-Qaeda and other Muslim fanatics on a "jihad" are not the only ones with terrorist tendency. Was not Timothy McVeigh's attack in Oklahoma City, Okla., not the biggest terrorist attack in U.S. history at the time? Ted Kaczynski, also known as the "Unabomber," an American anarchist who sent bombs to several universities and killed three while injuring 23 more, was an American terrorist, fighting against the U.S. at home. The bombing of Olympic Park in Atlanta, and the events occurring at Waco, Texas in 1993 are other examples of U.S. terrorist on U.S. soil. Terrorism is a threat to the U.S. everyday. There are numerous threats and bombings against abortion clinics, and just because they are not in direct protest to the U.S. foreign policy does not mean they are not terrorist attacks. The author brought up "big brother" that has been created by the Patriot Act. To understand what oppression and "big brother" are really like, we need to consult our parents' generations. J. Edgar Hoover the founder of the FBI, was said to have dirt on everyone. He tapped whose phones he wanted to because he had dirt on the judges authorizing the wiretaps. That is oppression and "big brother," not legislation, which is an attempt to prevent another tragedy. Just because there has been no major attacks against the U.S. by an Arab faction does not mean that another one is not going to happen. One thing to think about, if we have people working undercover in terrorist organizations helping us thwart terrorist attacks and it's working, are we really going to brag about it? I'm pretty sure we'd keep our mouths shut and hope that together we can stop more attacks and eventually eradicate the organization completely.
