Karam Chand, now an old man languishing in a remote village, was once a famous wrestler. Lying on the charpoy on the rooftop, he recalled his halcyon days when his bouts in the village used to attract multitudes of people form far and wide. People used to bet on him hundreds of rupees and he had never ever disappointed them.

He remembered how during the annual fair, he had such a fierce match against his rival. The rival wrestler would definitely would have defeated him, if fortune had not favoured him. He had tried all his moves and prowess to stun the rival but in vain. In the final round their scores were going neck to neck; and then suddenly, the rival wrestler’s foot slipped; Karam Chand seized the moment and threw him on the ground with his back touching the ground.

After that match Karam Chand had become a real hero. He enjoyed supremacy in wrestling for many years. Then as he aged, he began losing his strength; then a fatal accident rendered him invalid. Now his most cherished moments were the glories of his past which he relived in his mind while lying on the cot.

Lying on the charpoy on the rooftop, he recalled how he was the best wrestler in his village. There was not a single wrestling match that he had not won. Every year, when a wrestling match was held at the time of the annual fair, everyone knew who the winner would be. He had been so proud of his skills that he had gone to the neighboring villages and participated in the competitions there. He had easily defeated all the wrestlers there too.

All this had got too much into his head. In the last match that he had played, he was as usual leading against his opponent. There was a big difference in their scores when they entered the final round. Quite sure that the opponent would not be able to beat his scores, he had taken it far too easy and not focused on the opponent’s moves. Unfortunately, his rival noticed this and pulling himself up, gave Karam Chand a huge blow. Caught unawares, the blow sent Karam Chand falling to the ground on his back with full force. The impact of the fall was so much that he fractured his back. It took a long time to get back to normal and he was on bed rest for nearly six months. By the time he was normal, other wrestlers had taken his place and no one was interested in Karam Chand any more.
